Everyone wants more AI in the supply chain right now. Fair enough. The tooling is getting better, the use cases are multiplying, and the pressure to automate decisions is real.
But here is the uncomfortable truth: most supply chains do not have an AI problem first. They have a language problem.
If your ERP calls an order “released,” your warehouse system calls it “allocated,” your TMS calls it “ready to ship,” and your supplier portal still thinks it is “pending,” then AI is not stepping into a clean operating environment. It is stepping into a semantic bar fight.

Where bad digital language creates real operating friction
The phrase “data quality” can sound abstract. In logistics, it is not abstract at all.
A poor common language shows up in very physical ways:

Define the fields and rules that matter most across order, shipment, inventory, facility, partner, and exception records. Start with the objects that drive planning and execution every day.
2. Normalize event milestones
Pick a shared definition for key events like booked, tendered, departed, arrived, unloaded, delayed, and delivered. Then force upstream and downstream systems to map to those definitions.
3. Govern exception codes
Most exception workflows break because the reasons are too vague, too duplicated, or too carrier-specific. A cross-system exception taxonomy is one of the fastest ways to reduce noise.
4. Put orchestration ahead of more dashboards
If teams still spend all day reconciling statuses between systems, another analytics layer is lipstick on a forklift. Fix the language and workflow handoffs first.
