Forward Air's Q2 Recovery: Five Operational Signals Shippers Should Watch

Forward Air has delivered its best quarterly performance since acquiring Omni Logistics in January 2024. That is an encouraging turn after a difficult integration, but shippers should not confuse an improving income statement with consistently better freight execution. Financial recovery can fund operational stability; it does not prove that every terminal, lane, invoice, and exception process has recovered.
The right response is neither to abandon the carrier nor to assume the integration risk has passed. It is to measure the service events that directly affect customers and preserve alternatives until the evidence is consistent.
The financial recovery is meaningfulβ
FreightWaves reported that Forward Air generated $673 million in consolidated Q2 revenue, up 9% year over year, while adjusted EBITDA rose 18% to $93 million. The expedited freight segment, which includes less-than-truckload operations, produced $319 million in revenue, a 24% increase.
Operating activity also moved in the right direction. Expedited tonnage increased 7%, built from a 2% rise in shipments and a 5% increase in weight per shipment. Revenue per shipment excluding fuel improved 3%. The segment's operating margin reached 10.9%, an improvement of 340 basis points, while its EBITDA margin gained 200 basis points to 13.6%.
Those are not cosmetic improvements. More freight moving through the network with better margins can support terminal productivity, equipment availability, and technology investment. Yet several figures still justify caution. Purchased transportation increased by 430 basis points as a share of revenue. Net debt stood at $1.66 billion, equal to 5.2 times trailing adjusted EBITDA. Forward also recorded a $244 million noncash goodwill impairment related to Omni.
In short, the business has gained momentum, but it remains in a consequential integration and deleveraging period. Shippers need their own operational proof.
Five signals belong on the shipper scorecardβ
1. Tender acceptanceβ
Track accepted tenders as a percentage of valid tenders by lane, service level, day of week, and lead-time band. A network-wide average can hide chronic rejection on the precise airport-to-airport or deferred-service lanes that matter most.
Also record how often accepted freight is later rolled, recovered by a third party, or moved outside the original plan. The 430-basis-point increase in purchased transportation makes this especially relevant: outside capacity can maintain coverage, but it may introduce inconsistent handoffs or visibility gaps. Set a threshold for consecutive misses that automatically shifts volume to a backup provider.
2. Transit reliabilityβ
Measure promised versus actual delivery, not average transit. Report on-time performance and the 80th and 95th percentile elapsed time by origin-destination pair. Averages can improve while the worst shipments remain disruptive.
Separate delays into pickup, origin terminal, linehaul, destination terminal, and final delivery. That distinction tells a shipper whether a problem reflects local execution or broader network design. It also prevents a successful financial quarter from masking a weak terminal pair.
3. Claims frequency and severityβ
Heavier shipments can change handling characteristics. With weight per shipment up 5%, monitor claims per 100 shipments and per 10,000 pounds, plus average claim value and days to resolution. Include concealed damage, shortages, and handling-unit exceptions rather than relying only on paid claims.
Photographs, seal records, pallet counts, and scan events should be connected to the shipment record. If claims rise on a terminal pair, reduce exposure while the carrier and shipper investigate packaging, dock handling, or transfer frequency.
4. Invoice accuracyβ
Integration problems often surface in billing before they appear in executive reporting. Compare quoted and invoiced charges at the shipment level, including fuel, dimensional adjustments, reclassification, redelivery, storage, and limited-access fees.
Track the percentage of invoices requiring dispute, the dollar value disputed, and time to credit. A clean invoice rate below the agreed threshold should trigger a root-cause reviewβnot a growing queue of manual corrections. The best scorecard connects billing exceptions to the relevant lane, terminal, tariff, and customer profile.
5. Terminal exceptionsβ
Count shipments without an expected scan, shipments dwelling beyond their service window, missed connections, appointment failures, and freight requiring manual location work. Measure both exception frequency and time to resolution.
The most useful indicator is not whether exceptions occur; complex expedited networks will always have some. It is whether the carrier identifies them early, assigns ownership, supplies a credible recovery plan, and closes the loop. Shippers should define escalation deadlines by service level and shipment criticality.
Preserve optionality while the integration maturesβ
An improving carrier can deserve more freight without receiving all of it. Maintain at least one qualified alternative on critical lanes, and allocate volume according to observed performance. For example, a shipper might keep a stable baseline with Forward Air, award incremental volume after four consecutive weeks above target, and reverse the increase if two service thresholds fail.
